Dr. Avigail Manekin-Bamberger is a senior lecturer in the Department of Jewish History and Contemporary Jewry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a former fellow of the Martin Buber Society of Fellows. Her research centers on the social and cultural history of Jews in late antiquity, particularly Jewish society in the Sasanian Empire, rabbinic literature, and ancient Jewish magic. Her first book, Seder Mazikin - Law and Magic in Late Antique Jewish Society (Yad Ben Zvi, 2024), challenges the conventional divide between law and magic, showing how legal and magical discourses were deeply intertwined. Her current book project uses magical texts as sources to reconstruct the social history of Jews in the late Sasanian Empire.
