  • “Aristotle on Self-Motion“ (revision of my PhD thesis for publication)
The notion of self-motion (to auto heauto kinein) is central to Aristotle´s account of life and animal motion, but it also seems to play a pivotal role in the context of his cosmology and theology. My PhD thesis addresses central aspects of Aristotle’s doctrine of self-motion in Physics VIII, de Anima I 3-4 and III 9-10 as well as de Motu Animalium. In particular, it offers a fairly exhaustive overview of the most significant major points of disagreement between Aristotle and the most influential proponent of self-motion before him, namely Plato, with a special emphasis on the major theoretical innovations introduced by the former.

  • “Metaphysical Possibility and the Limits of episteme in Aristotle”
The chief aim of my project is to show that Aristotle’s approach to modalities is far less parochial and one-sided than has usually been assumed in the scholarship and does not just reflect the metaphysical idiosyncrasies of a physicist, but rather ultimately relies on a distinctive conception of logic and on a very rigorous characterisation of the methods of proof that are admissible in modal (and especially, problematic) syllogistic (cf. APr. A 13-22). These methods of proof are key to his metaphysics of modality precisely to the extent that they are designed to guide our intuitions about the metaphysically possible in a way in which, say, Kripke semantics clearly is not, the central difference being that Aristotle’s logic, unlike Kripke semantics, has to satisfy additional epistemological constraints stemming from the basic requirement that methods of (syllogistic) proof be applicable in science. A special emphasis will therefore be placed on the theoretical interplay of Prior and Posterior Analytics with respect to the treatment of possibility, a topic that has received comparatively scant attention over the past decades.
