The Qurʾan and Visuality in Late Antiquity and Early Islam

The conference, organized by Hannelies Koloska from the Martin Buber Society and Tawfiq Da’adli, Lecturer in the Dept. of Islamic and Middle Studies and the Dept. of Art History at the Hebrew University, addressed the hitherto neglected diversity of visual features in the Qur’anic text and their relation to late antique and early Islamic visual discourses in art and theology. Renowned scholars of different fields of research such as Qur’anic Studies, Archaeology, Early Christian Art and Islamic Art History presented various aspects of visual culture in their respective fields and discussed processes of adaptation, transformation and reinterpretation of imagery and visual concepts
