Current Projects:
The aim of my current research project is to produce an annotated edition of a corpus of 33 folk-narratives, ‘the tales of Mamo Yona’. Mamo (‘uncle’) Yona Gabbay Zaqen (Zakho 1867–Jerusalem 1970), an exceptional bearer and performer of the rich tradition of the Jews of Kurdistan and a well-known storyteller throughout Iraqi Kurdistan, was recorded during 1964 by Professor Yona Sabar for the Hebrew University’s Jewish Language Traditions Project (Mifʿal Masorot Ha-Llašon). Thus far only a small portion of this material has been published. The importance of this corpus is not only due to it being a rich sample of the Jewish Neo-Aramaic dialect of Zakho and an attestation of its condition before the contact with Israeli Hebrew; it is important also because it sheds light on various cultural and social aspects of the Jewish communities of Kurdistan, reflecting aspects of social structure, education practices, religion, customs, gender relations, relations with the non-Jewish surrounding, the function of storytelling in the community’s life, and more. The annotated edition will contain a transcription of the original Neo-Aramaic, translation into English, and analyses of the text using both linguistic and folkloristic approaches.

Current Projects
Sumerian is the first documented language of humankind. It is attested in Mesopotamia for three millennia (ca. 3500 BCE – 0). However, Sumerian was still used as a “dead” language for roughly two millennia (ca. 2000 – 0). Why? My project will try to answer this question from a linguistic, literary and historical perspective.

Current Projects:
Idit is currently working on a project entitled Money, Sovereignty and Corporate power: British East India Company Coinage in the Early Modern World. The project explores how corporate issued coinage played a role in the establishment of the BEIC’s sovereignty in India from the 17th-19th century. Idit’s dissertation, Non-governmental Monies in Early Modern England: A Social, Political and Material Culture Analysis, examined currencies issued by the private sector that were used for daily economic activity over long periods of time. Her work emphasizes how the government’s relationship with and control of low denominational coinage changed throughout the early modern period, symbolically and practically. Thus, showing how small change that was in ordinary men’s and women’s pockets signified large monetary shifts in the history of England.

Current Projects:
My current project investigates knowledge production about Islam and Muslim societies in the German-speaking 19th century, through the life and works of the German Orientalist and traveler Heinrich Freiherr von Maltzan (1826–74). The research opens a new perspective on the disciplinary history of Oriental Studies in Germany, and the role of the research traveler in the process of knowledge transfer and production.
My first book Charity in Saudi Arabia - Civil Society under Authoritarianism was published in 2022 in the Middle East Studies Series of Cambridge University Press. Charity offers a rare view on everyday practices of religion and religiosity of ordinary Saudis. The research demonstrates that under the umbrella of charity, Saudis and non-Saudis in Saudi Arabia have found one of the few legal avenues for collective activism. Through the lens of charity, the monograph offers a rich ethnography of associational practices in Jeddah. The research thus presents a rare bottom-up perspective on state-society relations in the kingdom, which opens new theoretical debates about civil society and socio-political reform in the Gulf.

Current Projects:
My first book project, Reaching for the Far-Fetched, draws attention to the unprecedented proliferation of speculative fiction and art in both Palestinian and Israeli cultures of the past twenty years. My second project, titled Shatature: Mapping Palestinian Cultural Capital, sets out to visually chart Palestinian diasporic literature as a material system that is in constant interaction with other literary systems around the world, using computational tools and quantitative research.

Current Projects:
My current project, Measuring the Temple: Architectural Ekphrasis and Mishnah Middot, is dedicated to the textual Jerusalem temple of the Mishnah and how Jews in the second century CE reimagined its architecture and why. I am interested in questions of (spatial) description and imagination in ancient Jewish texts and how they participate in Greco-Roman literary and rhetorical traditions.

Current Projects:
My current project addresses the formation of social cohesion and its reciprocal connection with the urban fabric in the cities of the medieval Mediterranean during the high middle ages. I am especially interested in examining socially heterogeneous urban environments, such as those that were transformed by the migratory movements of medieval settlers’ societies as were the Crusades, or the Norman settlement in Southern Italy and Sicily. The study will draw on a wide variety of sources from different case studies, including property transactions, chronicles, and archaeological evidence in order to reconstruct the intricate correlation between social structures and their spatial manifestations, as well as phenomena of urban growth and decline due to geo-political and climatic circumstances. Drawing on the different approaches to the concept of social cohesion in such fields as economic history, sociology and anthropology, etc., the study will also attempt to produce a new historically sensitive theoretical framework for the use of this concept in the study of medieval urban communities.

Social-Cultural Anthropology Science Technology and Society Studies (STS) Anthropology Beyond the Human Time and Temporality Israel/Palestine and the Middle East
Current Projects:
My first book manuscript (in progress) is entitled "Cultivating Time: Agrarian Sustainability and Survival in Israel/Palestine." The book examines the formation of recent sustainable agriculture policies and their impact on the state’s Palestinian citizens and argues that Israel governs through mechanisms of time that are embedded in new sustainability policies. I argue that time techniques in governance serve new forms of land control. Finally, the book suggests that the Israeli state should be understood not only as a colonization and governance of space project but also as a project dedicated to the colonization of time. Thus, I suggest we expand our understanding of sovereignty and governing from space and territory to time. My second book project, “Species Remaking Borders: Animals as Political Actors in the Borderlands”, examines the political ecology of pests and their techno-scientific management in Israel/Palestine and Jordan in the climate change era. I ask how regional relations of sociality and power operate through animal bodies and how do animals both disrupt and reinforce regional politics. Alternatively to dominant writings on human-non human entanglements that focuses on endangered species, I turn to nonhuman bodies that are here to stay in the Anthropocene such as pests, insects and microbes. These bodies allow us to reflect on the continuous significance of nonhuman bodies to societies in the Anthropocene and serve me as a lens to observe societal relations and the operation of power in the borderlands of Israel/Palestine and beyond.

Current Projects
I am working on a book, tentatively titled Capitalist Colonial and based on my dissertation, By the Sweat of Other Brows: Thai Migrant Workers and the Transformation of Israeli Settler Agriculture. I’m interested in how capitalist relations of production interact with colonial techniques of control at scales ranging from everyday interaction and the labor process to the transnational circuits of money, workforces and strategies of rural settlement.

Current Projects:
My current project is a study of Jewish craftspeople in medieval Northern Europe. Scholarship on the economic history of the Jews in medieval Northern Europe focuses almost exclusively on moneylending. This Jewish occupation generated a great mass of textual sources and is, therefore, most frequently explored. An economic and social history of Jewish professional involvement in crafts, however, has yet to be written. Jewish artisans such as goldsmiths, glaziers, or woodcarvers, among numerous other professions, such as messengers, launderers, or water carriers, frequently appear in our sources but are seldom accounted for by scholars. I aim to modify this paradigm of historiography by providing a new and broad discussion of Jewish professional occupation that will restructure our understanding of the medieval Ashkenazi society and economy. Such a study will help to reveal a more versatile Jewish society and its daily life activities in medieval Northern Europe.

Current Projects:
My current research interest concerns the relationship between Indonesia and the Middle East. After I researched Indonesians’ ideas of ‘Arabness’ in the context of pilgrimage and labor migration to the Arabian Peninsula, I am now working on religious tourism from Indonesia to Israel and the Palestinian Territories.

Current Projects
Erez’s dissertation, Politics of Innovation: The Entrepreneurial State and the Making of Israel’s ‘Start-Up Nation’, is a state-led account of Israel’s transformation from traditional manufacturing to a knowledge-based economy. Rather than the invisible hand of market forces, his work underscores the crucial role of industrial policy and the collaboration between private and public actors. His current research project focuses on Israel’s “Digital Health Initiative”, a new government program that seeks to foster economic growth and addresses a host of social-health related challenges that have only become more pressing following the Covid-19 epidemic

My research project seeks to cast new light on transatlantic Jewish culture and intellectual history from Fascist Italy to Postwar America, as seen through the case of a remarkable, but neglected, scholar, Isaiah Sonne, who was active in the crucial decades of the Fascist regime in Italy, left for Jerusalem in the aftermath of the Race Laws in 1938, and devoted the rest of his life in the United States to disseminating the Science of Judaism, as a research scholar, librarian, and private collector. Though a reconstruction of his life, I hope to write a new chapter in the history of the Jewish experience under Fascism and beyond.

Rights-based Activism Protest Movements Art and World Music Citizenship Studies
Current Projects:
My work explores the role of performance and aesthetic forms as a means of expressing belonging and identity in activist settings. In the context of LGBTQ rights activism in the Mediterranean, I examine the usage of aesthetic forms in communicating trans and queer rights claims for migrants and refugees.
Curriculum Vitae
Carolin Müller is at the Buber Society since October 2021. She studied Art Education and EFL at Technische Universität Dresden, where she wrote a semiotic analysis of William Kentridges animated drawings, and focused on the films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder during her studies in Germanic Languages and Literatures at the Ohio State University, where she also defended her PhD. Her doctoral thesis explores musical activism as a mode of civic activism that opposed the recent resurgence of anti-immigrant and neo-fascist attitudes and policies in the city of Dresden, Germany. Her overall research examines the relationship of art, performance, and politics in migration issues.
As a PhD student, she co-founded the Migration Studies Working Group at the Ohio State University, a doctoral student-led network of researchers, teachers, and community organizers, and continuous her work as a Social Media manager for the platform. Carolin has also organized and managed several artist residencies and exchanges with performers from Germany, Burkina Faso and the United States, whose projects focused on transnational connections and exchanges through artistic expression. She was a co-curator for the Migrants Music Manifesto in Cologne, Germany, during which questions of sustainability and network issues for transnational migrant artists were discussed. Apart from her academic and curatorial work, she is an avid printmaker and art educator herself.
As a coordinator of the Education & Technology program at Technische Universität Dresden, she led a doctoral colloquium, designed hybrid participation formats for doctoral candidates, and coordinated and managed an international summer school that took place in hybrid formats in 2021.

Current Projects:
My primary project concerns the rationality of emotions over time. I have written papers on grief, regret, resentment, and anger. I argue that many rational norms for emotions are about emotional processes rather than emotional states. This explains how very different emotional states, even ones that seem incompatible at first, can nevertheless be part of a single emotional response that unfolds over time.

Current Projects:
My main interest lies on researching sacred architecture and the role it plays for communities and regions. In my current project I will be working on the Byzantine settlements in the Negev desert, because these provide an extraordinary object of study for the interaction of church architecture within urban spaces in Late Antiquity.
The Negev desert offers several settlements that had a uniquely high standard of living in Late Antiquity and the Byzantine period. These towns are endowed with numerous churches that show a very distinct style in their architecture and ornamentation. The location of the Negev between Jerusalem, the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza and Petra places it at the nexus of pilgrimage and trade routes. Multi-lateral influence would therefore not only be possible, but expected. Nevertheless, the churches exhibit a particularly homogeneous, unostentatious style.
Based on art-historical and archaeological methods I will examine the architecture of the churches. Furthermore, cultural-historical interpretations will be utilized to explore the role of the churches in shaping the cultural space constituted by the Negev settlements. Since churches are markers and hallmarks of pre-modern urban spaces, I aim to provide a better understanding of the underlying cultural tendencies that made the Byzantine towns in the Negev such an interesting success story.

Ancient Philosophy Moral Responsibility Social Epistemology
Current Projects:
My research focuses on the nature and value of rationality, reasons and argumentation. I address these issues in the setting both of Ancient Philosophy and current epistemology and ethics. Currently, I work on the roots of our understanding of moral responsibility in Classical Antiquity, in and before Aristotle, and on the question in which way rationality and moral responsibility are interconnected. I am also interested in topics in social epistemology, such as the epistemic justice, fake news and the value of arguing with others.

Current Projects:
Yuval is currently pursuing two research projects. He is completing a book manuscript, “French Republicanism and the Problem of Empire: Muslims, Catholics, and Jews in French Algeria, 1870-1921.” This study explores the desires of all non-French groups in colonial Algeria - Muslims, Jews, and Catholic immigrants from Italy, Spain, and Malta - to become French while retaining their communal identities. It argues that France’s republican project of national assimilation, despite its explicit universalism, was predicated on the notion that only Catholic Europeans were a priori capable of becoming French. Yuval is also working on a new research project, “The Limits of Solidarity: Ethnicity and Class Politics in the French Mediterranean, 1918-1962.” This project explores interactions between French, Italian, Spanish, Muslim, and Jewish workers in labor unions and during strikes in the Mediterranean cities of Marseille, Tunis, Algiers, and Constantine.

Current Projects:
My current research focuses on the emergence of urbanization in the Early Bronze Age in the southern Levant (3700-2500 BCE). It includes three complementary components: 1) Tel Qedesh excavation project – a new field project designed to reconstruct the socio-economic development of one early urban mega-site in the Galilee during the Early Bronze Age; 2) Regional and inter-regional analysis of the settlement system around the mega-site of Tel Qedesh and other urban centers in adjacent regions; 3) Comparative analysis of late-historical and ethnographic data to study the pre-modern era relating to the Arab village of Qadas (located on Tel Qedesh until 1948) and the Galilean settlement system.

Current Projects:
My project works towards a poetics of Hannah Arendt’s writing. To that end, it aims to identify the constitutive textual elements and practices of Arendt’s art of writing as well as to chart their dynamic interplay and integration into ever more complex discursive scenarios. Such a comprehensive philological description in turn becomes the reflexive medium for exploring in depth the various modes in which the concepts that emerge from Arendt’s singular space of writing are shaped by its tightly interwoven processes, temporalities, and rhythms of narrativization, figuration, citation, and (inter-)linguation.

My current project deals with the socio-economic history of the Parthian Empire (247 BCE- 224 CE), mainly through an analysis of legal, administrative and literary texts. The project examines issues such as ethnic composition, social hierarchies, land management, labour, capital, markets and inter-regional trade in three key areas of the Parthian empire: The imperial capital of Nisa (Mithradatkirt) and its rural hinterland, Babylonia and the Parthian frontier regions.

My current projects investigate how the increasingly influential Global Citizenship Education framework might be brought into productive conversation with pedagogies for teaching English to speakers of other languages, building on my previous research on the role played by English language teaching in Israel in reproducing exclusionary ideologies.

Current Projects:
My current research examines how Palestinian literary productions have surmounted their circumscribed position within the Arabic context. Looking beyond the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and the Arab diaspora, it is a sine-qua-non condition to recognize artistic expressions of Palestinian experiences articulated in English, Spanish, Italian, Danish, and Hebrew, among other languages from the Americas, Europe, and Israel. The critical move of interlacing literary productions by Palestinian authors in different languages is necessary in the case of Palestinian literature, since it amalgamates works that represent diverse deterritorialized experiences in the absence of a successful nation-building project. My contention is that these writings are critically important insofar as they expand the scope of the linguistic-cultural framework whereby it is possible to express and interpret today’s increasingly diverse Palestinian experiences.

Gili S. Drori is professor of sociology and anthropology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, and Director of The European Forum at The Hebrew University. She also serves as President of the Israeli Sociological Society. Gili earned her academic education at Tel Aviv University (BA 1986; and MA 1989) and Stanford University (PhD, 1997, sociology). Before joining the faculty of The Hebrew University in 2011, Gili served as Director of IR Honors Program and taught at Stanford University for a decade. She also taught at the University of California Berkeley, the Technion (Israel), and University of Bergamo (Italy) and was a guest scholar at Uppsala University (Sweden). Gili’s publications speak to her research interests in: globalization and glocalization; organizational change and rationalization; world society theory; science, innovation and higher education; technology divides; and, culture and policy regimes.
Liran Razinsky is a senior lecturer in the program for Hermeneutics and Cultural Studies at Bar Ilan University, Israel. He is working on French and comparative literature, French thought and psychoanalytic theory. His book, Freud, Psychoanalysis, and Death, a study of the psychoanalytic approach to death, was published in 2013 by Cambridge University Press. Razinsky has written papers on, among others, Georges Bataille, Guy de Maupassant, Albert Cohen, Michel Leiris, Elias Khoury and Jorge Semprun. He has also published on Freud and on Psychoanalysis. He has edited recently a special issue of Yale French Studies on Semprun and earlier co-authored a collection of papers on Littell’s The Kindly Ones (Les Bienveillantes). He has published in journals such as SubStance, Modern Language Quarterly (MLQ), French Forum, Yale French Studies, The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, The Psychoanalytic Review and Contemporary Psychoanalysis. His current research project, “Fantasies of Self-Representation: From Classical Autobiography to the Digital Age,” focuses the stakes involved with representing oneself, both in autobiography and in more everyday self-representation
