For this year's retreat/workshop, we spent two days in the downtown area of Haifa. The first day was devoted to work in small groups of 5-6 participants (the fellows, a senior fellow, and the staff), in the beautiful gardens of the Colony Hotel. The discussions set out from questions dealing with our individual and disciplinary research aims, highlighting the tensions that occur in the space between our own work and the conventions of the various disciplines. Of course, the discussion deepened well beyond this point of departure, and the various groups developed different questions related to academic and intellectual life. We finished the day's work with a trip to the seashore and dinner in Wadi Nisnas.
On the second day, after a tour of Haifa guided by the architect and conservationist Walid Karkabi, we returned to the discussion table, this time as a single large group, and pursued further implications and questions that came up as the result of the previous day's discussion.
