Dr. Nimrod Hurvitz - The Hanbalis of Baghdad: Mass movement, legal institution, religious activists
Activity Date:
Monday, Apr 11, 2016

Madhhab, inadequately translated as “school of law,” is an original Muslim institution, that refers to legal doctrine and social organization. However, although the madhhab’s social features are important, they have not received much attention from historians of Muslim law and society - who, notwithstanding a few notable exceptions, tend to focus on doctrine. This lecture will present the most conservative madhhab, the Hanbalis, and as a historiographic corrective, it will discuss how it can be studied as a socio-political movement.
