Činggis Qan and China: Problems and Methods in the Study of the Mongol Empire
What are the challenges and methods for the study of the history of the Mongol empire?
Due to the scarcity of coeval primary sources in Mongolian language scholars have to rely on a variety of other sources, from historical records in several languages, as well as archaeological and artistic materials.
A comparative approach is therefore fundamental to discern the different perspectives and cultural perceptions of the ruling elites and the ruled populations, and their ways to integrate each other in their own historical narratives.
Taking the concept of the charisma of Činggis Qan as a case study, the paper analyses the strategies leading to the formation of a vast, multicultural empire, whose legacy has influenced the construction of national identities in many regions of Central and East Asia.
The figure of Činggis Qan has undergone, in the course of the centuries, many elaborations, serving geopolitical interests, the formation of religious and cultural identities, till the most recent interpretations from "ethnic hero", to icon of popular culture.
This phenomenon is connected to the broader question of the role of charisma not only as a rhetorical means legitimating political power, but also as a way of shaping society, and as a linkage between historical and contemporary realities.
